Latest report states Matt Canada is the front-runner for Steelers offensive coordinator job

The Pittsburgh Steelers are searching for their next offensive coordinator. This would be the latest offensive play caller in the Mike Tomlin era, joining the likes of Bruce Arians, Todd Haley and Randy Fichtner.

Just days ago it seemed as if the Steelers had their guy. On the same day it was being reported Matt Canada was heading down to Miami to interview for the Dolphins’ coordinator opening, reports circulated how the Steelers were planning on making Canada their next coordinator.

Obviously confused, the fan base wondered who else was interviewed, or yet to be interviewed, for the opening. After all, the Steelers would have to comply with the Rooney Rule, even for a coordinator position.

This week fans learned of Hue Jackson and Pep Hamilton both getting interviews for the vacant position, and while fans await to hear the end result of this job search, one report is stating the Steelers are almost certain they know who they want…

…and it is the same guy we all thought got the job initially.

This from Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh:

Could the Steelers hire Canada, and also convince someone like Hamilton or Jackson to stick around as a quarterbacks coach? Will the Steelers even fill the vacant quarterback coach role if Canada is promoted? Remember, when Fichtner was promoted from quarterback coach to coordinator, the team had Fichtner absorb both the coordinator and quarterback coach roles.

Then you have the reports on how the Steelers would like to hire an offensive line coach before they hire a coordinator. If that is true, the Steelers’ only public interview for the line coach is Hank Fraley, who was the Detroit Lions’ offensive line coach in 2020.

The Steelers’ will have more coaching turnover in 2021 than the past few years combined, and you can expect more news to break in the coming days. Be sure to stay tuned to BTSC for the latest news and notes on the black and gold as they press through what could be a very tumultuous offseason.
