Golden Nuggets: How will Scangarello help Jimmy Garoppolo?

We’re going to start talking about different scenarios and outcomes for the 49ers season today. It’ll involve keeping specific players and letting other ones leave the building. After we’ve come up with four or five, we’ll rehash each and see which is the best scenario.

49ers’ Rich Scangarello: The Garoppolo Whisperer

“Rich doesn’t get enough credit, in my opinion. There’s a lot of moving pieces, but Rich has been with me since I first got here. Literally the first day I walked in here we were going over stuff after I did all the interviews and whatnot. I think a big part of our relationship was that bye week, though. A lot of one-on-one time. We only had a couple of receivers here so we got to know each other pretty well. He’s a smart coach and he makes it a lot easier for me to go through my reads when he explains things how I understand them.”

49ers now own the 5th-best odds to have Deshaun Watson for the 2021 season

Below are the 10 teams with the best odds of having Watson as their Week 1 starter, according to Bovada.

  • Texans +170
  • Dolphins +300
  • Jets +300
  • Bears +500
  • 49ers +900
  • Patriots +1000
  • Colts +1400
  • Washington +2000
  • Eagles +2500
  • Lions +3500

The Texans remain the favorite despite Watson making it clear that his preference is to depart the organization that made him the No. 12 overall pick in 2017. The team and its frustrated player are not seeing eye-to-eye, and the relationship may be beyond repair. Watson has not officially requested a trade, nor have the Texans declared that such a move would be considered.

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Dolphins get Tua help, 49ers land Trey Lance

12. San Francisco 49ers: Trey Lance, QB, NDSU

Any quarterback in a Kyle Shanahan system will succeed, but one with the talent of Trey Lance can soar. Jimmy G is the definition of a game manager, Trey Lance can be a game changer. Getting his arm strength and mobility will really open up the fantastic playbook of Kyle Shanahan.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah gives his take on the forgotten man in Lance:

“I was shocked at the maturity in Lance’s game. It’s uncommon to see a redshirt senior demonstrate this type of control and mastery of a system. Lance was a redshirt freshman! He does a wonderful job staying in the moment and executing. I didn’t expect to see such a polished player at this stage of his development.”

The 49ers offense struggled with injuries this year, but it is quite clear that Jimmy G is not the man for the job in San Francisco. His deficiencies are masked by Shanahan’s system that would thrive with a player like Trey Lance running it. This offense will immediately be in contention to be a top-5 unit.

Cheap Free Agents the 49ers Should Target, Part 2 — Corners

If the 49ers are looking for bigger-bodied corners at a low price, Rasul Douglas is an option.

His on-field production has yet to really arrive in his four seasons, but his physical traits are hard to ignore.

The 6’2, 2017 third-round pick by Philadelphia started 11 games for Carolina in 2020 and turns 27 in August.

If the 49ers are able to re-sign Witherspoon, Douglas would not be a need.

Yet, if San Francisco does lose out on its own inconsistent 6’2 cornerback, Douglas would make a cheap alternative, and add size to a division that plays DeAndre Hopkins and D.K. Metcalf twice a year.
