The Early Signing Period for the class of 2021 is in our crosshairs (Dec. 16-19), with a bevy of players on the board and several several blue-chip recruiting battles still being settled.
Recently, I gave my intel on where a handful of uncommitted players were leaning. Today we have some clarity on when many of those decisions will be made. According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, these are the top 10 “available” prospects in the class and when they are scheduled to make their life-changing commitments.
Schools in position for exciting finishes include Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Georgia, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and perhaps even SMU.
Korey Foreman, DE
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 1
High School: Corona (Calif.) Centennial
Expected Date + Skinny: The No. 1 overall prospect in the country is set to announce a college decision on Jan. 2 during NBC’s broadcast of the All-American Bowl Declaration Day. No longer planning to enroll early, Foreman could wait until February to sign his letter of intent. In what has been a very fluid recruitment including a one-time commitment to Clemson, Foreman still has several schools in play including those Tigers, who he visited over the weekend. Other programs in strong position include LSU, Georgia, Arizona State and of course local USC.
J.T. Tuimoloau, DE
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 2
High School: Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic
Expected Date + Skinny: The five-star defensive lineman has always planned to take his recruitment to the finish line of Feb. 3’s National Signing Day. That remains the plan with the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon and USC pushing.
Emeka Egbuka, WR
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 8
High School: Steilacoom (Wash.) High
Expected Date + Skinny: Nothing is locked in for Egbuka. He could pop during the Early Signing Period but it also wouldn’t be surprising if he held off to February. The No. 1 receiver in the country has been trying to visit Oklahoma before making a decision and that has yet to happen. Ohio State has been the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for much of the process. Washington remains a factor as well down the stretch.
Tristan Leigh, OT
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 11
High School: Fairfax (Va.) Robinson Secondary
Expected Date + The Skinny: The top-ranked uncommitted offensive tackle is set to announce his college decision on Jan. 2 alongside Foreman as part of the All-American Bowl Declaration Day on NBC. Leigh told 247Sports he still wasn’t sure if he’d sign early and wait to go public during the broadcast or hold off till February before putting pen to paper. LSU, Oklahoma and Ohio State have been three big factors down the stretch. Clemson and Florida have upped their pursuit.
Maason Smith, DT
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 21
High School: Houma (La.) Terrebonne
Expected Date + The Skinny: Smith says he’ll sign during the Early Signing Period and I still like LSU for his signature. Georgia has always been a major factor and has gone back and forth with the Tigers, so we’ll see if the Bulldogs make a move in the final month. Alabama, Florida and Miami round out the final five for Smith who has visited nearby Baton Rouge a couple times already during the pandemic, spending time with Foreman.
Camar Wheaton, RB
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 23
High School: Garland (TX) Lakeview Centennial
Expected Date + The Skinny: There was buzz Wheaton could decide on his birthday last week but that obviously didn’t happen and no decision date moving forward is locked in. Alabama, Oklahoma and LSU make up his top three with the Sooners holding the 247Sports Crystal Ball advantage and the Crimson Tide considered the biggest challenger.
Tunmise Adeleye, DE
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 31
High School: Katy (TX) Tompkins
Expected Date + The Skinny: Adeleye will announce his college plans on Dec. 17, which is the second day of the Early Signing Period. He has a top three of Alabama, Florida and Texas A&M, though the Gators appear to be fading. Texas A&M’s position has seemed promising throughout the fall but a visit over the weekend to Tuscaloosa to watch the Crimson Tide cruise to an Iron Bowl win did help Nick Saban & Co.
Donovan Edwards, RB
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 36
High School: West Bloomfield (Mich.) High
Expected Date + The Skinny: Edwards will enroll early at the school of his choosing so although we don’t have a decision date we still have a decision timeline for the Early Signing Period. Michigan is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite, Georgia has been in the thick of this one throughout including a strong visit back in the spring and Notre Dame is making a move late in the process with their great season. Alabama, LSU, Penn State and Oregon made the final seven.
LJ Johnson, RB
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 45
High School: Cypress (TX) Cy-Fair
Expected Date + The Skinny: Johnson has always planned to sign early but that’s not a definite for the dynamic Lone Star State back. Johnson has a final four that includes Texas, Texas A&M, LSU and Oklahoma but this appears to be a Longhorns-Aggies battle with both programs having forecasts logged on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.
Savion Byrd, OT
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 48
High School: Duncanville (TX)
Expected Date + The Skinny: A decision date is locked in for Dec. 16 with three finalists in Oklahoma, LSU and local SMU. The 247Sports Crystal Ball is basically split between the Sooners and Mustangs and it’s been a bit of a back and forth between those two as well.
