Texas Jack Byron Vauhgns enters NCAA transfer portal

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle and later confirmed by other outlets, Texas Longhorns redshirt sophomore Jack Byron Vaughns entered the NCAA transfer portal hours after he didn’t play in Saturday’s win over the Baylor Bears.

The 6’4, 225-pounder is the second Longhorns player to enter the transfer portal since the season started — redshirt freshman cornerback Kenyatta Watson II recently transferred back to Georgia to play for the Yellow Jackets.

Vaughns appeared in the season opener against UTEP, but hasn’t received playing time at Jack or on special teams in recent weeks. As a redshirt freshman in 2019, Vaughns appeared in 10 games, including receiving extensive playing time against Kansas, when he posted a career-high eight tackles.

However, with the arrival of Chris Ash as the new defensive coordinator, Vaughns wasn’t able to crack the depth chart at the Jack position, giving way to former tight end Reese Leitao and former walk-on Jett Bush.

A consensus three-star recruit out of Fort Worth Eastern Hills in the 2018 recruiting class, Vaughns was always a developmental prospect, but possessed enough upside when he signed that he was ranked among the nation’s top 450 players, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
