Ga’Quincy McKinstry commits to Alabama on CBS Sports HQ

Ga’Quincy McKinstry, a five-star prospect and the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in the 2021 recruiting cycle, announced his commitment to Alabama late Sunday afternoon live on CBS Sports HQ. The elite defensive back from Pinson (Ala.) Pinson Valley chose the Crimson Tide from a group of three finalists that also included Auburn and LSU.

The 5-foot-11 1/2, 172-pound McKinstry is the latest high-profile prospect to commit to Alabama as the Crimson Tide boasts the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings. Alabama has now landed five players who are considered five-star prospects on the 247Sports Composite. McKinstry is the 22nd commitment of the cycle for Alabama, which has three pledges classified as cornerbacks in this class.

The 247Sports Composite rates McKinstry as a five-star recruit who is ranked No. 24 overall in the country’s 2021 recruiting cycle. He is ranked No. 1 nationally among 2021 cornerback prospects, as well as No. 1 overall regardless of position in the state of Alabama for his class. The Top247 rankings place McKinstry similarly: No. 18 overall, No. 1 among 2021 corners, and No. 1 overall in Alabama.

McKinstry provides two-way impact for Pinson Valley, which he has helped to a 6-2 record so far this season. Entering Friday night’s game against Jasper (Ala.) — which resulted in a 55-33 victory for Pinson Valley — McKinstry had caught 31 passes for 425 yards and five touchdowns on 13.7 yards per reception, plus one interception on defense, according to Al.com.

Here is the 247Sports scouting report on McKinstry, who is compared to Baltimore Ravens star cornerback Marcus Peters: “Possesses a lean build with good length and stature for a cornerback. Tested as a good athlete prior to his junior season and should continue making progress on that front as he spends more time in the weight room over the next few years.

“In addition to the football field, shows his athleticism as an above-the-rim basketball player and one of the better hoopers in Alabama. Is an outstanding and productive two-way player on the gridiron, starring as a receiver and corner for Pinson Valley. Has elite ball skills as a corner and would also be a top prospect as a receiver if he wanted. Shows the ability to consistently pluck the ball at his highest point and win in contested situations on both sides of the ball. In addition to high-pointing and out-jumping the competition, also shows the ability to locate and track the ball downfield.

“Makes difficult plays at a high rate and finds multiple ways to effect the game. Instinctive in coverage and shows the ability to read the quarterback’s eyes and break on the ball. Impresses with his competitive nature. Will need to continue honing his coverage technique as a cornerback, which should come once he focuses on the sport and position full time. Projcts as an impact multi-year starter at the Power 5 level with the upside of developing into an early round draft pick.”
