Jon Gruden told reporters after the Raiders’ 34-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Monday night that he had the coronavirus and he knows wearing his mask is important, although it has been a challenge for him at times early in the season.
Jon Gruden on not wearing his mask: “I’m doing my best. I’ve had the virus. I’m doing my best. I’m very sensitive about it. I’m calling the plays. I apologize. If I get fined, I will have to pay the fine.”

Gruden didn’t give any details about when he had the coronavirus. There was a report in the summer that Gruden tricked the team into thinking he had COVID-19 at the beginning of training camp to illustrate how serious it is. Gruden denied it.
Gruden has often talked about the importance of dealing with the pandemic. After a Week 1 win at Carolina, Gruden said he needed to do a better job of wearing a mask on the sidelines.
Then on Monday night during the Raiders-Saints game, it was reported that three NFL coaches have been fined $100,000 and their team have been fined $250,000 for mask infractions on Sunday.
NFL fined three head coaches – – Denver’s Vic Fangio, Seattle’s Pete Carroll and SF’s Kyle Shanahan – $100,000 each for not wearing masks Sunday, and each of their teams another $250,000, sources told ESPN.
So that’s $1.05 million dollars in fines for not wearing masks.
