Class of 2021 five-star cornerback Tony Grimes will announce his college decision on CBS Sports HQ at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30. You can use the above HQ streaming player to watch it or go to https://www.cbssports.com/live/.
Grimes, the No. 7 overall player according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, will decide between Georgia, Ohio State, North Carolina, and Texas A&M.
The No. 1 cornerback in the 2021 class, Grimes also received interest from Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Texas, and USC, among many others.
A 6-foot, 180-pound prospect from Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Va., Grimes’s 247Sports Crystal Ball reads 100 percent for the Tar Heels.
CBS HQ is a free, 24-hour sports news, analysis, and highlights streaming show. You can watch CBS HQ online here or on any streaming device.
“I am looking for more of a connection and knowing that there is someone there, that when I get there, I can trust, and someone who is going to develop me,” Grimes said recently in regards to what was important when selecting a school. “Who is going to develop me more and who is going to put me in a position where I can play, ball out, and get developed for the next level?”
If Grimes commits to North Carolina he would be the second-highest ranked commitment for the Tar Heels in the modern internet recruiting era, falling right behind former UNC defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who was ranked No. 4 overall in the 247Sports Composite for the 2007 class.
A pledge from Grimes on Tuesday would also give UNC 17 total commitments for the 2021 class and move the Tar Heels to No. 3 in the 247Sports Composite team rankings. Grimes would join a class featuring 11 247Sports Composite four-stars. Grimes would be only the third player not from the state of North Carolina in UNC’s 2021 class.
Grimes has built a strong relationship with UNC cornerbacks coach Dre Bly, who is from the Tidewater area, as well as head coach Mack Brown. “I love Dre,” Grimes said of Bly in the spring. “He knows where we came up from, and how hard it is because he did it. He was ‘The Man’ at UNC. He went to UNC. In the Hall Fame, Pro Bowl, Super Bowl. I love Dre.”
247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohn projects Grimes as a potential first-round NFL Draft selection, comparing him to Chicago Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller. Here’s the full scouting report from Dohn:
“Wide shoulders and good length. Frame of safety with cornerback skills. Instinctual player with high skill level. Physical and smooth. Tracks ball well and has great timing. Opens hips and runs with ease. Long strider who can cover on long crossing routes and deep throws. Strong upper body helps re-route receivers with jams. Comfortable in backpedal and explodes forward out of it. Good tackler and asset in run defense. High IQ on and off field. Leadership qualities. Must get stronger in lower body. Ready to play at elite program when he steps on campus. First-round NFL draft pick potential.”
