Outer Banks isn’t the only teen dramas featuring rich kids and murder streaming on Netflix.
Perhaps the single greatest genre of trash TV (scripted division) is the teen drama. Undoubtedly there will be love triangles, if not love rectangles, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, etc. Typically there’s a little class conflict. More often than not, there will also be at least felony driving the plot, usually its manslaughter.
According to Netflix, Outer Banks is a “coming of age story that follows a tight-knit group of local teens in the beach vacation destination of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.” As the autoplay trailer explains, there are three types of teens frequenting Outer Banks: the working class locals, the rich kids summering in second homes and the tourist kids just there for a week. Storms (literal, social and emotional), a “high stakes treasure hunt,” a murder mystery and more ensue — you know, your standard teen summer fare.
But if you’ve binge-watched Outer Banks you know all this and you’re looking for your next show. Which leads us to believe you’re looking for a show with, in order of priority:
- Teen drama
- Class tension
We got you.
Not-on-Netflix honorary mention: The O.C. and Revenge
Criminally, neither The O.C. or Revenge are on currently streaming on Netflix.
The O.C. is the ultimate “for fans of Outer Banks” show. It’s a teen drama, most of the action takes place on or near the beach, there are mean rich kids and a cross-the-tracks romance and most crucially perennial summertime energy.
Revenge, on the other hand, is basically the life and times of the Outer Banks teens 10 years later and in the Hamptons instead of North Carolina.
Both are strong, but ineligible recommendations for this list.
