Boston College Baseball Swept By #8 Arizona State

Boston College was over matched in their weekend series at Arizona State, dropping all three games to the eighth ranked Sun Devils.

The Eagles sent their ace Mason Pelio to the mound to start game one, but he was uncharacteristically hittable. Pelio conceded 7 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits, 3 walks, and a HBP in just 4 innings. ASU’s 4 run 4th chased him from the game, and BC trailed the rest of the way.

The first five batters in BC’s order went a combined 11 for 24, but the back half of the order was hit-less, stalling run production. Despite matching ASU’s 11 hits for the game, BC lost 10-4.

Arizona State jumped out to an early lead in game two with a first inning solo home run off Joe Mancini. The 1-0 score held until the 6th, when BC went ahead 2-1 on a Sal Frelick home run and Luke Gold RBI single.

But Mancini came undone in the bottom of the 6th. He allowed a home run, then a walk, then threw the ball away on a sacrifice bunt, before he was pulled with two on and none out. Michael Marzonie entered and got two big outs, but after issuing an intentional walk to load the bases, he threw a wild pitch that scored a run, then allowed a two run single that put ASU up 5-2.

Arizona State scored two more in the 7th, including another run on a wild pitch by Marzonie (his third of the game). BC added two runs in the 8th, but it was too little too late, as the Sun Devils won game two 8-4.

Emmet Sheehan started game three, and a lack of control continued to plague the Eagles’ pitching staff. Sheehan lasted just two thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on a hit and five walks.

Yet again, BC saw excellent production from the top of their lineup. Frelick, Brian Dempsey and Cody Morissette went a combined 7 for 13 with 3 RBIs, and scored all 4 of BC’s runs on the day. But ASU’s bullpen held the Eagles to 0 runs and 3 hits over the final five frames, sealing another 8-4 victory, and the series sweep.
