Rockets to fill open roster spots with veterans DeMarre Carroll and Jeff Green

According to reports, the Rockets have found solutions to fill their two open roster spots in the buyout market.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported that newly-bought out forward DeMarre Carroll was no longer a Spur and that the Rockets were the favorite to land him.

And ESPN’s Tim McMahon doubled down on the Rockets’ buyout market reports, announcing that Jeff Green has signed with the team.

Woj then reported that Green will sign a 10-day deal before possibly signing on for the remainder of the season.

So, that’s a lot to unpack, but it appears that DeMarre Carroll and Jeff Green will soon become Rockets that will ingratiate themselves into the team for the stretch run.

What are the Rockets getting in these two guys?

Carroll, 33, signed a restructured 3-year, $21 million deal with the Spurs only to play just 15 games for the team.

Carroll conceded playing time early in the season as the Spurs shifted towards a young, rebuilding squad and did not crack the rotation.

Last season with the Nets, Carroll averaged 11.1 points per game while shooting 34 percent from beyond the three point line.

But Carroll’s biggest strength comes on defense. For a guy to have a nickname “Junkyard Dog,” you have to be good on the defensive end.

When Jeff Green plays for the Rockets, it will be his eighth different uniform he’s suited up for since the 2014-15 season.

Like Carroll, Green’s fit with his previous team, the Utah Jazz, was nice on paper but questionable on the court. Green played just 30 games this season before being shown the door.

Last season with the Wizards, Green played a hefty role. He averaged 12.3 points per game and started in 44 of the team’s games while shooting nearly 35 percent from distance.

Green’s career has shifted from being a small forward to predominantly a power forward, but at 6’8”, Green could be tasked with defending many opposing bigs.

The Rockets might not be so sure of the fit, considering the team is only signing him to a 10-day, but there is belief that Green is the right fit, and if you are the Rockets, you have to be happy with this haul.

Considering the light buyout market, the Rockets have waited patiently and found players that will fit the system like a glove, can shoot the ball from deep and defend multiple positions.

The Rockets won’t need huge contributions from their two buyout buys, but what they get might be exactly what they need.
