Queen Latifah pays touching tribute to Kobe Bryant at NBA All-Star Weekend

Queen Latifah honors Kobe Bryant as she changes the lyrics to Stevie Wonder Love’s In Need Of Love Today at NBC All-Star Weekend

Queen Latifah paid tribute to late basketball legend Kobe Bryant while performing at NBA All-Star Weekend this Saturday in Chicago.

The 49-year-old actress was singing the 1976 Stevie Wonder song Love’s In Need of Love Today and added some of her own words in the middle.

Her performance included the lines: ‘Give love a shot. When you do, say: “Kobe!” Twenty-four hours, eight days a week, trophies!’

The phrase ’24 hours’ had a double meaning, as 24 was also the number on Kobe’s jersey when he played for the Lakers.

Atlanta Hawks co-owner Grant Hill, a former NBA player himself, gave a nod to Kobe and former NBA commission David Stern while introducing Queen.

Grant told the audience at United Center that ‘like Kobe Bryant, David believed the power of our game to change lives….

‘And while recognizing the tremendous loss we feel in our hearts, we know they would want us to keep our heads up and continue to play on.’

He concluded: ‘So, tonight, as we celebrate the game we all love, we’ll reflect and rise together as one NBA family. Here to perform a song with that message in mind is my friend, the great Queen Latifah.’

Kobe tragically died last month in a helicopter crash in Calabasas along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

On Friday his widow Vanessa posted a heartbreaking Instagram post marking her first Valentine’s Day in her entire adult life without him.
