Since the growing consensus between fans, bloggers, local media and national talking heads is that Bill O’Brien should be be relieved of his duties with the Houston Texans, let’s turn the page and entertain the mythological “next Houston Texans coach” from a pool of candidates that actually have plays ready for 4th and 1 when the time comes.

Forbes.com of all places has a pretty solid list of candidates to choose from, as does CBSSports.com. Some possibilities, with the implicit understanding there’s an almost zero chance the Texans are in the market for a new head coach right now:

  • Eric Bienemy – former running back turned “the man who coached up Adrian Peterson” to Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, ‘Sleeping with Bieniemy’ (as ESPN’s Chris Berman dubbed him) is seemingly one of the hottest candidates out there for 2020 despite the ongoing curiosity that is team after team with head coaching vacancies hiring someone else.
  • Matt Eberflus – what better way to emulate the Titans’ success than to steal the Colts defensive coordinator?
  • Josh McDaniels – if the McNairs are the ones driving the whole ‘let’s be New England’ thing, what better person to replace O’Brien than his rival for Bill Belichick’s affections, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels?
  • Greg Roman – if he could do what he’s done with Lamar Jackson, what could he do with Deshaun Watson?
  • Robert Saleh – maybe the McNairs go for a defensive-minded coach for a change and bring in the guy who led one of the most stifling defenses in the NFL…maybe.
  • Jim Harbaugh – let’s face it, until he return to the NFL or retires, Harbaugh will be in every rumor swirling about a head coaching opening.
  • Dabo Swinney – who better to wring every drop of excellence out of Deshaun Watson’s prime years than the guy who did just that with his collegiate career?
  • David Shaw – same as Harbaugh, his name will continue to come up in coaching carousel conversations until he retires or takes an NFL gig.

If none of those guys catch your eye, maybe Houston just makes a lateral move and hires Marvin Lewis or Jason Garrett (even though Garrett is the Giants’ offensive coordinator now, he could be hired away for a head coaching position)?

While chances are slim Cal McNair pays enough attention to the team to realize he needs someone else running the show, fortune favors the prepared. Let’s choose for him.
