‘You can’t give agents control’: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Manchester United pulled out of race for Erling Haaland thanks to Mino Raiola’s demands

  • Manchester United were close to solving their striker crisis by signing Haaland
  • But at the last minute United pulled out and Dortmund swept in for £17m
  • Sportsmail reported United rejected Raiola’s demand for future transfer cut
  • Solskjaer has now confirmed this, saying ‘you can’t give agents control’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Manchester United pulled out of the race to sign Erling Haaland because of his agent Mino Raiola.

The teenager seemed destined to head to Old Trafford this transfer window before Borussia Dortmund swooped in for £17million.

Sportsmail reported at the time of the transfer that United rejected the demands of Haaland’s representatives, Mino Raiola and father Alf Inge Haaland, because they wanted a significant share of the player’s future sales value.

Yellow cards: 3

And now Solskjaer has confirmed this, telling reporters at a press conference on Wednesday: ‘It’s important that we use common sense.

‘There are other things too when you sign players, that you have to keep in control. You can’t give agents the control by giving buyout clauses and stuff.

‘That has been touted around, that is for me, we have to be in control.’

Solskjaer was speaking ahead of United’s midweek game with Burnley as he struggles with a dearth of strikers in the wake of Marcus Rashford’s injury and the failure to sign Haaland.

And the Norwegian may come to regret not signing his fellow countryman, as Haaland got off to the dream start in Dortmund, coming off the bench to score a hat-trick in 20 minutes on Saturday.

Solskjaer was in the market for a striker before Rashford’s injury after selling Romelu Lukaku in the summer.

Rashford has been United’s main goal threat this season but the England star now faces a spell of up to three months on the sidelines.

Mino Raiola previously dismissed his role in the transfer breakdown with United, calling the accusations ‘strange and disappointing’.

The super agent insisted that Haaland rejected the advances of United and that he has not fallen out with their executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

‘I do not know if Manchester United are briefing this but if they are then they are covering their own loss and that I find strange and disappointing,’ Raiola told The Telegraph

‘There was no fall-out between me and (United executive vice-chairman) Ed Woodward. It was just a normal negotiation and the player has chosen a different path.

‘If they want to blame someone then, fine, blame me but the player is happy. He has made his choice and we went through a normal process.’

Solskjaer worked with Haaland for 18 months while the former was manager of Molde, but a reunion did not come to fruition.

The United manager even flew to Salzburg on a private jet to deliver a personal sales pitch to the player and his representatives before Haaland opted to move to Dortmund.
