Chelsea ‘offer to pay Edinson Cavani’s £360,000 a week wages and a £5m loan fee’ in bid to land PSG striker on deal until the end of the season… but French giants still hope to sell out-of-favour star for up to £23m this month

Chelsea have made an offer to take Edinson Cavani on loan from PSG for the rest of the season, according to The Times.

Blues boss Frank Lampard is on the hunt for a new striker and earlier this week revealed that he is an admirer of the 32-year-old Uruguayan.

Chelsea are said to have now followed up their interest with an official bid, which includes paying a loan fee as well as Cavani’s £360,000 a week wages.

Chelsea have reportedly made a loan offer for PSG’s Edinson Cavani as they look for a striker

The Ligue 1 champions are claimed to want at least £5m to allow the forward to depart this month, despite his contract expiring at the end of the season.

And PSG chiefs would still prefer to sell Cavani permanently before the end of January, believing that they could yet receive up to £23m for the former Napoli star.

Chelsea’s offer would cost the club in excess of £12m until the end of the season, at which point the veteran would become a free agent.

Speaking about Cavani on Monday, Lampard said: ‘He’s a great player; I played against him and always loved his mentality and attitude, and his scoring record speaks for itself.

‘I’m not absolutely aware of what the situation is, so we’ll see.

‘The idea of bringing in experience is something I’m certainly not absolutely looking away from, because sometimes the young players need a little bit of help, and if that’s the case then that may help us.’

Cavani’s preferred choice this month is a move to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, according to his father Luis.

The Spanish side reportedly failed with an £8.5m bid for him after holding talks over a potential 18-month contract in the Spanish capital.

Luis Cavani told Spanish television programme El Chiringuito: ‘He wants to join another club in Europe. That would please me that he plays here (at Atletico), yes.

‘(Diego) Simeone wants him now (in January).

‘The head coach of Paris Saint-Germain (Thomas Tuchel) has also said he needs him to help compete in the Champions League.

‘But PSG do not want him to go to Atletico Madrid if he finds an agreement.

‘I think there is a strong chance he will go to Atletico, the option to join the club (Atletico) always remains in June.

‘There are lots of other clubs but when you give your word to a team, you respect it. If tomorrow, if he is available and Atletico still want him, I think he will sign.

‘He is a player who needs time to play and today he only plays four or six minutes per game. PSG are treating him unfairly.’
