According to a report from FootballScoop.com, current McNeese Head Football Coach Sterlin Gilbert will become the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach for the Syracuse Orange. Gilbert previously worked with Orange Head Coach Dino Babers at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green, winning FCS Coordinator of the Year in 2013.
Update: This is official now
Gilbert is coming off a 7-5 season at the helm of McNeese, his only season as head coach. He’s previously coached at Tulsa, Texas, and USF along with his experience with Dino.
For those wondering, there haven’t been any announced changes regarding the current Orange Offensive Coordinator or Quarterbacks coach Kirk Martin. Mike Lynch has been the OC since Sean Lewis left to become the Head Coach at Kent State. Martin was brought in two seasons ago, coinciding with the arrival of his son (and Dino’s son-in-law) Koda Martin as a graduate transfer from Texas A&M.
Regardless of what changes happen, it’s great to see Babers and the administration realize changes needed to be made. There was plenty of speculation here concerning the job security of of both Lynch and Martin, along with others. Along with hiring of Zach Arnett, Syracuse football has made the big changes needed to rebound after last year’s disappointment.
