NEWS FROM ELSEWHERE IN LONGHORN LAND AND THE BIG 12
- Boy, oh boy, a win on the road must feel good for men’s team head coach Shaka Smart. The Longhorns started fast and finished strong against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater last night, securing a 76-64 victory. Five players scored double-digit points for the Longhorns: sophomore forward Kamaka Hepa scored 15, including three three-pointers. Junior guard Jason Febres put up 13 of his own. Junior guard Matt Coleman scored 10. And sophomore guard Courtney Ramey and senior Andrew Jones both put up 14 each.
- The Texas women’s basketball team knew they had to put up or shut up if they were to be successful in taking on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. And that’s just one they did, as they pulled off a 92-66 win last night in the Frank Erwin Center. Per usual, the stars of the night for the Longhorns were forward Charli Collier (23 points) and Joyner Holmes (17 points.)
- Yahoo Sports reports that the Baylor Bears are targeting Virginia Tech Hokies head coach Justin Fuente as the next head honcho to lead their football program, after Matt Rhule bowed out for a job with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers earlier this month. From our SBNation neighbors Our Daily Bears: “Fuente is apparently hiring staff at Virginia Tech, so maybe this is a leak on his side and a way to try and get a raise. But some Virginia Tech fans aren’t worked up he’d leave. Football Scoop reported that a Baylor hire feels immediate. They said Fuente is a candidate – but pointed out he’s hiring staff, which could be a problem if he’s really looking to leave. They added this: ‘In addition to Fuente, sources tell Football Scoop Billy Napier interviewed today and Mack Rhoades was interested in speaking with LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda as well. Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson and current Baylor assistant Joey McGuire are also believed to be candidates.’”
