TCU’s Paul Gonzales one of CFB’s rising defensive coaches | 247 Sports

This was great work by JC.

“It was crazy; it was surreal. It was just one of those things where you’re in the right place at the right time,” Gonzales said of being named cornerbacks coach. “You’re extremely grateful for the opportunity to get that job because at TCU when that job comes open there’s probably at least 5,000 applicants. Coach was gracious enough to give me that opportunity. For me, it was ‘I’m going to get this one chance, you can’t screw it up’. It was surreal really. It just happened to be the right time and he thought I was the right guy for the job. I’m forever in debt to Coach (Patterson) for giving me that opportunity because he didn’t have to do that. There were a lot of other guys that were probably more qualified than me, but he wanted to give me that opportunity.”

For those that have followed Patterson over the years, they are fully aware that he doesn’t pay much attention to what outsiders think of the way he runs his program. That definitely includes his approach on hiring or firing coaches; he doesn’t need a big splash hire nor does he feel the need to fire coaches over what some may see as poor performances.

TCU’s Patterson says ‘chemistry’ most important part when building a coaching staff | The Star-Telegram

Patterson has prized continuity and chemistry, and for the most part, it’s worked.

That’s his top priority in hiring assistants, more than any X’s and O’s knowledge. And that’s what Patterson has been looking for with two vacancies.

“Staffs are about chemistry,” Patterson said from the AFCA Convention as he became the organization’s president on Monday.

“I know a whole lot of people who have a lot of knowledge, but they don’t get along. … What do they bring to the offensive or defensive room? How do they get along? They’re the ones who spend 18 hours a day with each other.

“One of the reasons why we’ve always been successful is our staffs have always gotten along.”

Can’t spell transfer quarterback without OU!

“Remind me to show you — somebody went into the portal,” Patterson said to Gundy. “Guess where he’s going to end up. I’m going to show you.”

Gundy, who was running the point as a moderator of sorts for the broadcast’s ongoing discussion with Patterson and the other two coaches chiming in at different points, appeared to be more surprised.

”We got another portal (entry)?” Gundy said to Patterson. “Tonight?”

TCU has its worst loss of the Jamie Dixon era as West Virginia rolls to easy victory | The Star-Telegram

Let’s pretend this never happened.

The Frogs (12-4, 3-1) entered the game with their best start to conference play in 21 years, but that came to an abrupt end. They’re also now 0-7 at West Virginia, and 2-85 all-time against ranked opponents on the road.

Asked about what makes Morgantown a tough place to play, senior guard Desmond Bane said: “They play a different style. They’re real physical. It’s a tough place to play. A lot of people probably won’t come in here and win this year.”

The Mountaineers (14-2, 3-1) showed why they’re the best rebounding team in the Big 12, dominating on the boards 38-24. They also forced the Frogs into 20 turnovers.
