Two ACC games as basketball begins to take center stage now that college football is over and the NFL is drawing near too.

#10/11 Louisville visits Pitt and Mike Young takes Virginia Tech on his first trip to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest.

It looks pretty clear from here that Virginia Tech should win that game, especially if Chaundee Brown is still out. Wake has bigger players but Virginia Tech knows how to score and knows how to draw offenses away from the basket for backdoors too. Wake’s vulnerable.

We wouldn’t rule a Pitt win out but that won’t be easy. If Jeff Capel gets his guys focused and playing smash-mouth defense, we’ve seen Louisville get hesitant when people do that.

Speaking of Pitt, Jeff Capel loves basketball but worries that kids sometimes play too much and that it can backfire. Harry Giles might agree: the former Duke star had three knee operations by the time he was 20.

Capel: “I think it’s very important for the parents to be smart about what they allow their child to do. We used to tell guys, or encourage them, ‘Hey, shut it down after a certain point in the summer. You don’t need to prove anything. You’ve done this. You don’t owe anyone anything. Take care of your body, rest. It’s important for you to have a great senior year of high school, but (also) to be rested.’

“As a parent, you have to not be caught up into all the glitz and glamour and understand what’s in the best interest of (your) child. Is my child tired? Is he playing three games a day for two consecutive weekends? Is that smart? Two or three games a day, traveling, all of these things. It’s a major, major problem.”

It’s a pretty quiet night but one more important story: UNC’s Brandon Robinson was in a car accident this weekend and may miss UNC’s game against Pitt. Apparently he was hit by someone who was buzzed on something.

You have to feel for him. He’s young and healthy and minding his own business. Who does that?

He joins, at least for a couple of days, Anthony Harris, Sterling Manley, Jeremiah Francis and Cole Anthony as injured Tar Heels.

Harris and Manley are out for the year.

One more small UNC note: former Roy Williams assistant CB McGrath was fired by UNC-Wilmington after starting his third season 5-14.
