Jose Mourinho plans to meet up with Manchester United staff he considers friends on his return to Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The Portuguese wants to avoid the sort of hysteria that has engulfed his trips to former employers in the past – and is hopeful of catching up with those he retained relationships with at United.

Mourinho’s exit was swift when United sacked him last December and he did not make the same sort of farewell speech that Louis van Gaal performed when departing in 2016.

Sportsmail understands the Tottenham manager will seek out the likes of club chef Mike Donnelly, some members of the medical team, the kit men and ground staff during his short window back in Manchester.

Mourinho claimed to have been inundated with ’50 messages from Manchester United people,’ after becoming Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement in the capital. He believes he forged lasting friendships with a collection of staff, despite a turbulent final few months at the helm during which some working relationships were soured.

The reception he receives by United’s supporters will be of significant interest. A number serenaded the 56-year-old from the stands while on duty as a pundit for Sky Sports earlier in the season.

Mourinho’s rapport with Chelsea fans is now tainted after a section taunted him during a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge back in 2018, when coach Marco Ianni provoked the United boss following a last-gasp Ross Barkley equaliser.

Mourinho responded to the crowd with a three-fingered salute, representing the three league titles they lifted under his management, and subsequently had no problem taking over at their London rivals.

It is understood Mourinho wants Wednesday night to go calmly, viewing it as a ‘normal’ game and he holds no ill-feeling towards Ed Woodward.
