Taylor Swift banner to be covered up at Staples Center for Los Angeles Kings games

Taylor Swift banner to be covered up at Staples Center for Los Angeles Kings games following fan outrage and being dubbed an ‘eyesore’

Before the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Los Angeles Kings made their home debut at Staples Center this season, the team announced a Taylor Swift banner, considered an ‘eyesore’ by fans, will no longer be seen during games.

The 29-year-old singer received the banner in August 2015, after her 16th straight sold-out concert at Staples Center, where the Kings play, along with the NBA teams the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Staples Center president Lee Zeidman said there are no plans to remove the banner entirely, and the choice to cover it was made solely by the Kings team.

‘The connection to our fans is our highest priority and through our engagement they have made it clear that the banner shouldn’t be part of their Kings game experience,’ said Michael Altieri, senior vice president of marketing, communications and content for the Kings and AEG Sports.

‘We didn’t see an issue in covering it for our games and in fact see it as an opportunity to show our fans that we hear them,’ Altieri added.

Some have even believed that the banner may have created a ‘curse’ of some kind, since the banner was raised a year after the Kings’ last Stanley Cup win in 2014, and the team finished with the second worst record in the NHL last season.

The banner was revealed to Swift during her 16th straight sold-out performance at Staples Center in August 2015, the most of any artist in Staples Center history.

The banner was actually unveiled by Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant during the concert, which hangs next to the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks’ championship banner and reads, ‘Taylor Swift Most Sold-Out Performances.’

The Los Angeles Lakers have no plans to cover the banner when the NBA season starts later this month.

The Los Angeles Clippers already cover the Swift banner and all of the Lakers banners with photos of Clippers players during their games, which they have done since 2013.

Swift herself has yet to respond to her banner being covered at this time, but, ironically, she has not performed in the arena since receiving the banner four years ago.

Swift will return to Los Angeles this summer, though, slated to open the brand new, $5 billion SoFi Stadium in July.

The singer will perform two shows at the new home of both the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers on July 25 and 26, the first event ever at the stadium before the NFL season kicks off.

Swift will then become the first female artist ever to open an NFL stadium.
