The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

When Trevor Bauer is on, he is so very on. He was definitely on tonight (after working around some trouble in the first).

So yeah, he gets an easy trophy, because the rest of the Reds were a big, wet fart.

Honorable mention to Freddy Galvis, for being a Reds batter that did any runs before the 9th inning, and then also the Red that did the run in the 9th inning. Both Tucker Barnhart and Josh VanMeter did just enough to keep the Reds alive late, alas, they couldn’t finish the job.

Key Plays

  • Trevor Bauer found himself in a spot of trouble right away in this one. Greg Garcia smoked a grounder down the first base line that, luckily for the Reds, actually hit the first base bag, keeping Garcia to a single. Bauer then walked Josh Naylor before allowing a single into center from Manny Machado that scored Garcia. Bauer got Eric Hosmer to strike out, Hunter Renfroe to pop out, and Francisco Mejia to whiff, too, to get out with only the single run. Padres lead, 1-0.
  • Freddy Galvis cranked a two out dinger to put the Reds on the board in the second. Tied at 1 after two full innings.
  • With two outs in the top of the 4th, Mejia smacked a dinger. Padres on top, 2-1.
  • Garcia reached with two outs in the top of the 5th and would come around to score on a pretty ugly error by Jose Peraza in left field, who never looked comfortable tracking the ball to the wall and let it go off his glove. Oof. Padres get one more, 3-1.
  • Galvis singled with one out in the 9th and moved over to third on a Tucker Barnhart double. Josh VanMeter would score Galvis with a single to left to bring the Reds within one. However, Nick Senzel grounded into a fielder’s choice that ended with Barnhart in a run down for the second out. Jose Iglesias was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the guy you’d probably like the bases to be loaded for in this situation: Eugenio Suarez. Unfortunately, he struck out swinging to end the game. Reds lose, 3-2.

Other Notes

  • Nick Senzel was scratched prior to the game with elbow soreness, the same elbow he took a pitch off of in yesterday’s game. It doesn’t appear to be serious.
  • It was noted on the broadcast, but Manny Machado has kind of eaten Trevor Bauer alive over their careers. Coming into the game, Machado had hit .643/.722/1.643 in 18 plate appearances. Machado only managed the one hit off Bauer tonight.
  • Well the end really sucked, huh?
  • San Diego and Cincinnati will crank it back up for game two tomorrow night, with red hot Sonny Gray facing off against righty Cal Quantrill. First pitch scheduled for the typical 7:10 PM EDT.
  • Tunes.
