31 year old MLB veteran Tom Koehler, who’d appeared in four rehab games over the past couple weeks, was placed back on the disabled list with the right shoulder strain that’s kept him out of any official games since September of 2017.

Altoona activated LHP Elvis Escobar, shut down after two spring training appearances with a left shoulder strain, then then who made eight rehab appearances over the past four weeks. Signed in 2013 as an outfielder, the 23 year old switched to the mound last summer and got a significant workload for someone new to pitching, appearing in 18 games and 30 innings the rest of the summer and another 23 games and 13 23 innings in the Venezuelan Winter League. Since his initial appearance in a blowout loss for Altoona, Escobar has a 2.56 ERA with 22 walks and 58 strikeouts in 52 23 innings over 48 games.

The GCL Pirates placed RHP Emmanuel de los Santos (2.51 ERA in 14 13 IP) on the 60 day DL. He last appeared on July 13.

SS Mariano Dotel (150/150/200 in 8 games) was demoted from Greensboro to the GCL Pirates.

Games

Triple-A

Indianapolis (61-64) wins 8-7 in 10 innings over visiting Lehigh Valley (60-64)

C Christian Kelley’s (180/249/293) single to center against a five-man infield with one out in the bottom of the tenth plated the fake runner for the Indians’ come from behind victory.

Down 7-2 with one out in the bottom of the ninth, foru straight walks and a wild pitch closed the gap to 7-5 before 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes (244/317/395) launched a game tying homer, his ninth of the season.

James Marvel (13-5, 2.99 ERA in 144 13 IP) has only his second rough start in eight at Triple-A, giving up a two=run homer in a three run first and then letting in two more in the third. In only three innings he threw 71 pitches, giving up seven hits and a walk while fanning just one batter.

J.B. Shuck (4.50 ERA, 19 K’s in 14 IP) came on and struck out three in two hitless innings. Shuck has not allowed a run in eleven of his twelve appearances

Parker Markel (1.74 ERA, 75 K’s in 41 13 IP) later struck out five in two innings. Between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis, Markel has struck out seventeen in nine innings, allowing two hits and four walks.

Double-A

Altoona (62-63) edges visiting Bowie (68-57) by 5-4 score

A eighth inning throwing error by the pitcher on LF Chris Sharpe’s (255/335/439) sacrifice bunt allowed 3B Brett Pope (250/321/326), who had doubled, to score the tie breaking run.

The Curve had overcome a 3-0 deficit when they scored four in the sixth, keyed by SS Oneil Cruz’s (307/358/495) two-run double.

Starter Sean Brady (4-12, 4.81 ERA in 140 13 IP) had an adequate game allowing three runs, including a solo homer, on five hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out seven.

Left-hander Elvis Escobar (3.12 ERA, 9 K’s in 8 23 IP) was credited with the victory after blowing the lead in the top of the eighth on a single and a double, but then struck out each of the next three batters.

High-A

Bradenton (67-58) loses 6-1 at Lakeland (57-65)

After a string of three straight one-run appearances, starter Gavin Wallace (4-8, 4.22 ERA in 98 IP) was blasted for the second game in a row, tagged with four first inning runs then after settling down was chased from the game by a two-run homer in the fifth. In four and two thirds innings he was charged with six runs on nine hits and two walks, striking out four.

CF Travis Swaggerty (269/347/389) continued his hot hitting, collecting two of the Marauders’ five hits.

Low-A

Greensboro (73-51) falls short by 3-2 score to visiting Augusta (67-57)

The Grasshoppers could only manage single runs in the sixth and eighth innings as starter Alex Manasa (9-4, 3.50 ERA in 128 23 IP) danced through the raindrops, allowing three runs in five innings on on six hits and three walks. He struck out only two batters.

CF Fabricio Macias (274/325/382) and DH Jack Herman (263/344/493) each went 2-for-4 while SS Ji-hwan Bae (306/390/391) had an RBI double.

Short Season A

West Virginia (34-27) victorious 7-3 over visiting Williamsport (25-37)

C Kyle Wilkie (271/350/314), this year’s 12th Round pick out of Clemson, went 5-for-5 a day after collecting four hits, as the Black Bears banged out thirteen hits, including five doubles.

Starter Grant Ford (3.24 ERA in 33 13 IP) allowed a two-run homer in the third, the only runs in his four and two thirds innings, on four hits and three walks. The bullpen shutdown Williamsport until the ninth, with Johnstown’s Trey McGough (2.81 ERA, 31 K’s in 25 23 IP) earning the victory as he retired all seven batters he faced.

Wilkie drove in two with his four singles and a double, while 1B Will Matthiessen (240/340/336) also drove in two with his two singles and a double.

Advanced Rookie

Bristol (28-29) loses 4-3 in 9th inning walk-off at Bluefield (28-29)

Bluefield’s Spencer Horwitz scored from second on a infield single in the bottom of the ninth to make a loser of Alex Roth (3.71 ERA, 20 K’s in 17 IP), who was starting his third inning of relief.

Dante Mendoza (6.57 ERA in 38 13 IP) had a decent start, allowing three runs in five innings on three hits and two walks as he struck out four.

The Pirates had nine hits, but struck out ten times without a walk. DH Yoyner Fajardo (363/412/393), 3B Matt Morrow (304/372/374) and CF Daniel Rivero (250/319/305) had two hits apiece.
