This week was one to forget for the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. One week ago the team found out the news that wide receivers coach Darryl Drake had died overnight at Saint Vincent College, but the week that followed was anything but routine.

The team altered their practice plans, and the weather wreaked havoc on the final week of training camp in Latrobe, PA. Nonetheless, the Steelers still took the field Saturday, albeit delayed by an hour, to play host to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 of the NFL Preseason. But when they did their helmets had some new life to them.

The Steelers wore a new ‘DD’ sticker on the back of their helmets in honor of the late coach Drake, and you can see what the decal looked like in the image below, courtesy of Ian Smith of KDKA:

It is not known whether the Steelers will wear these decals all season, or just for a few weeks. The NFL must approve any sticker or decal a team wears on their helmet, but it seems as if this would be a case where the NFL deems the sticker to be acceptable.

In the past the Steelers have worn patches on their jerseys for owners Art Rooney and Dan Rooney after their deaths, and the helmet decal seems to be a suitable fit to remember a coach who impacted many while in Pittsburgh.

Stay tuned to BTSC for the latest news and notes surrounding the black-and-gold as they prepare for the 2019 NFL season.
