With start of season looming, who will Seahawks acquire in trade?

Friday Kenneth took a dive into some of the names who could potentially be traded in the coming weeks as the Seattle Seahawks prepare for roster cuts. Today I’m taking a quick look at how often the Hawks make a move to acquire a player late in the preseason, specifically at certain positions. The big name move that the team made in 2017, the acquisition of Sheldon Richardson from the New York Jets, was of course, largely driven by the unfortunate injury with Malik McDowell.

In addition, acquiring a big name player like Richardson via trade was a departure from the normal course of operations for Seattle, who have far more often acquired a much lesser known name for the defense in recent seasons. Specifically, it seems like nearly every August the Seahawks take a look around the league and add either a safety or a cornerback in exchange for a late round pick.

Since Pete Carroll and John Schneider arrived in 2010, here’s a list of only the defensive backs that they have acquired via trade in August or early September.

In short, in each of the past five seasons the Hawks have acquired a defensive back on the eve of the regular season starting. The last time Seattle didn’t trade for a defensive back in August or September was 2013, when they had an abundance of riches at the position and they ended up winning the Super Bowl with CB4 Byron Maxwell starting opposite of Richard Sherman. (Maxwell started the season as CB4 behind Sherman, Brandon Browner and Walter Thurmond, but was pushed into action following suspensions to both Maxwell and Browner.)

In any case, as noted on Friday, the Seahawks have been very active in the trade market in the latter part of August and early September over the last ten years. With a young group of defensive backs that is filled with youth and upside, it wouldn’t be a significant surprise to see the team acquire yet another defensive back in trade. Thus, as rosters begin to take shape for teams in the coming days and weeks, don’t be surprised if all of a sudden there’s a defensive back you’ve never heard of on a flight to Sea-Tac to join the Seahawks.
