The big news from today’s game is that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. came out of the game before the third inning with discomfort in his left knee. No word on whether he will miss any games or not yet.
Trent Thornton had a pretty good start. 6 innings, 5 hits, 3 earned, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. He gave up a home run to Austin Nola, a solo shot in the fourth inning. He had troubles at times with the strike zone. First batter of the game, Tim Lopes, was down 0-2 and then Trent walked him and the gave out 3 walks in the second inning (but only one run scored.
6 innings and 3 earned makes it a quality start (and we haven’t had a lot of those this season).
Sam Gaviglio pitched a nice 3 up 3 down seventh.
Derek Law came in after the home run, finished out the eight and pitched the ninth and extended his little streak of scoreless outings to 13 games.
On offense, we didn’t do quite enough. 9 hits but just 3 runs.
We scored one run in the:
We had a shot at tying things in the 9th. McGuire hit a 2-out double and Bichette went to a full count, but struck out looking on a pitch that was on the very outside edge of the plate. Maybe a strike, maybe not, but likely too close to take.
Bo had two hits, the homer and a single. He was also thrown out trying to steal third, just a bad play, in the first inning. A really bad idea in front of Vlad.
The Mariners made a number of very good plays on defense.
Derek Fisher had a bad moment, losing a ball in the lights in left, turning an easy out into a double and it cost us a run. And Drury made a wild throw to first, a high hop grounder, he was playing in, watching for a bunt single and had to back up to get the hop. He tried to make a terrific play, but he should have held on to the ball.
Jay of the Day: McGuire (.249 WPA plus the caught stealing).
Suckage: Mayza (-.205 for the home run), Grichuk (-.201 for an 0 for 4), Fisher (-.157, for an 0 for 3, with a walk, plus the ball lost in the lights), Tellez (-.132 for 1 for 4). Bichette had a -.091, a lot of that because of the strikeout to end the game (and had the caught stealing) so he earned it, even with the home run.
