Red Sox Minor Lines: Bobby Dalbec hits another one

Pawtucket W 6-5

Tzu-Wei Lin, SS: 3-5, 1 R, 1 K

Marco Hernandez, 2B: 0-5, 1 K, 1 CS

Chris Owings, LF: 0-1, 1 BB, 1 R

Rusney Castillo, RF: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 R, 4 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB

Bobby Dalbec, 1B: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 R, 1 RBI

Josh Ockimey, DH: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K

Mike Shawaryn: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K (52 pitches)

Jenrry Mejia: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K (23 pitches)

Ryan Brasier: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (10 pitches)

Bobby Poyner: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K (32 pitches)

Trevor Kelley: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K (13 pitches)

It took a few games, but this is about what we expected when Dalbec was promoted to Triple-A to play with the major-league ball. Homers have been flying out of the park in Triple-A all year, and we all know Dalbec’s power even with a normal baseball. He now has two homers in as many days and he’s hitting .407/.429/.667 in his first week with Pawtucket. Good times!

Portland L 3-7

Jarren Duran, CF: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Marcus Wilson, RF: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K

C.J. Chatham, SS: 1-3, 1 K

Joey Curletta, 1B: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Brett Netzer, 2B: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI

Bryan Mata: 4 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 5 K (88 pitches)

Durbin Feltman: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (21 piches)

Mata is starting to scuffle a bit over his last couple of outings with the Sea Dogs. After his previous start in which he allowed four runs on five hits without recording an out, this was certainly a step in the right direction but still not what you want. Most notable here is that the righty allowed two homers on the day. This was the first game all year in which he allowed multiple homers and he had allowed just four long balls all year prior to these two. Mata is a 20-year-old at Double-A and his start on Saturday marked a career high while he had just recently passed his career high in innings, too. Struggles down the stretch shouldn’t be too surprising.

Salem W 3-0

Ryan Fitzgerald, SS: 1-4, 1 K, 1 E

Pedro Castellanos, 1B: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K

Devlin Granberg, LF: 1-4, 1 K

Edgar Corcino, RF: 2-4, 2 K

Thad Ward: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 8 K (91 pitches)

Logan Browning: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K (30 pitches)

Joan Martinez: 2 IP, 1 H 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K (43 pitches)

It sure looks like the coaching staff and Castellanos have figured something out. Throughout his minor-league career scouts have marveled at his power potential in batting practice but have never seen it translated into games. That is starting to change. For the first half of the year he was still a punch-less first baseman, but with another homer on Saturday the first baseman now has five homers in his last 12 games and six of his seven homers on the year have come since July 17. Meanwhile, just another strong start for Ward, who struggled a bit with control but was able to work around that. He’s down to a 2.28 ERA at High-A.

Greenville W 2-0

Tyler Esplin, RF: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K

Triston Casas, DH: 0-2, 1 BB, 2 R, 2 K

Kole Cottam, 1B: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K

Brandon Howlett, 3B: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K

Chase Shugart: 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K (96 pitches)

Well hello there Chase. Last year’s 12th round pick, Shugart got off to a late start this season after a suspension for the first half of the year, but he’s rolled since then. In 14 starts and 78 23 innings the righty has now pitched to a 2.40 ERA with 64 strikeouts and 19 walks. This start came at a perfect time, too, as he had allowed at least four runs in each of his last three starts. Offensively, there wasn’t a whole lot going on but Esplin now has three straight multi-hit games and four in his last five.

Lowell W 10-3

Gilberto Jimenez, CF: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 RBI

Cameron Cannon, SS: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

Stephen Scott, 1B: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, 1 K

Nicholas Northcut, 3B: 0-4, 2 K

Nick Decker, RF: 2-4, 1 3B, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

Antoni Flores, 2B: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB, 1 CS

Noah Song: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (52 pitches)

Yusniel Padron-Artilles: 4 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K (79 pitches)

It’s been an extremely up-and-down year for the Spinners offense, which as I’ve talked about is to be expected. This is a group of young, raw and inexperienced players. Nobody is expecting consistency. Games like Saturday’s are indicative of some of the talent here, though, with all of the big names besides Northcut contributing. Amid all of that, it is still Jimenez and Decker standng out among the rest, which is fitting given how the rest of the year has gone. Also, Song pitched again and ho hum and he impressed everyone in the crowd.

GCL G1 L 5-11

Ceddanne Rafaela, 3B: 3-4, 1 3B, 2 R

Dominic D’Alessandro, 1B: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 R

Matthew Lugo, DH: 1-2, 1 RBI

Aaron Perry: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K

GCL G2 W 2-0

Ceddanne Rafaela, 3B: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K

Gregorio Reyes: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

DSL 1 W 3-1

Darel Belen, DH: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K

Eduardo Lopez, CF: 2-3, 1 3B, 1 R, 1 SB

Angel Bastardo: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K

DSL 2 L 7-8

Bryan Gonzalez, RF: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 CS

Gregori Custodio, 1B: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K

Jose Navas, C: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI
