Day 5 of Broncos camp is in the books and today was a rough day for the Broncos offense. The defense has been dominating all of camp and that continued today as the team heads into their first day off during camp.

Today we have the Broncos offense continuing to struggle, UDFA receiver/returner Trinity Benson continuing to turn heads, Barclay replacing Leary, news and notes, an injury report, quotables, and more.

Note: I was not at camp and this is just a collection of news and notes from other sources with my thoughts and opinions sprinkled in.

Offense continues to struggle

After a promising performance by the Broncos offense on day 4, they took a step back today with a sluggish performance by pretty much everyone. You had passes tipped at the line, interceptions, would be sacks, penalties, dropped balls, and just a performance that leaves some worrying about Rich Scangarello’s offense.

After five days and five practices, the offense has consistently struggled, but Head Coach Vic Fangio said he isn’t panicking yet. “not really, yes, but not panic yet. Talk to me in a couple weeks and see.”

Fangio was also asked about the amount of drops the Broncos offense has had during this first week of practices. He kept it simple and told reporters that the players “need to stay focused and not be worried about getting hit”.

“Just keep catching balls from the quarterbacks and the jugs machine and stay focused and not be worried about getting hit. Just all the little things.”

I am staying patient with the Broncos offense. It’s still just July 22nd, you have a new offense, a new offensive coordinator, and a tough defense on the opposite side of the field. They need time to grow and have plenty of time to do just that. It is the benefits of being in the Hall Of Fame game and the Broncos will need every practice they can get to prepare for the 2019 season.

UDFA wide receiver Trinity Benson continues to stand out

The explosive undrafted wide receiver continued to impress today during the Broncos practice. He was one of the lone bright spots on the offensive side of the ball and has continued to help his chances at making the 53-man roster.

Fangio was asked about Benson after practice and he said he hasn’t watched him much but Special Teams coach Tom McMahon told him that he has been progressing well.

“I haven’t spent as much time over there, but [Special Teams Coordinator] Tom [McMahon] told me he’s progressing. The number one job of a punt returner is to be a reliable catcher of the punt, and we always need to keep that in mind. That will shake itself out. Hopefully we can force some punts in these five preseason games and we’ll see these guys in action.”

Your top five wide receivers on the depth chart(injury depending) is pretty locked in. Sanders, Sutton, Hamilton, Patrick, and Winfree. The sixth receiver is often a returner and that is exactly what Benson is.

Really looks like that final wide receiver spot will come down to Brendan Langley and Trinity Benson. So that will be a battle to watch during the coming days and weeks.

Don Barclay replaces Leary

With veteran guard Ron Leary still working his way back to injury, the Broncos decided to give him a rest day as they head into their first day off of camp. This allowed veteran Don Barclay to step into that first-team right guard spot.

Head Coach Vic Fangio told reporters that it is a benefit to have someone like Barclay on the roster who has experience, but that alone won’t help him win a 53-man roster spot.

“It’s a benefit, but still Don’s going to have to make the team based on merit and not on experience, but it was good to have him in there. It’s nice for the guys that—the center next to him, the tackle next to him, they know they’re working with a guy that has played some so that does ease their execution a little bit.”

Barclay has received those first-team reps all offseason so his odds of making the roster are good right now.

With Leary’s injury history, it is very likely that he or one of the other reserves will get some starts this season. So getting work with the first team now makes sense.

Vic Fangio on his philosophy behind holding longer practices during training camp

“I just think guys have to practice. The only way you get better is to practice and get more reps. One thing you all need to keep in mind is there are 90 guys out there. Although we’re out there a long time, there’s nobody getting more than maybe a third of the reps, so individually it’s not that long other than being out there. But, that’s how long a game is. If we were to throw a halftime break in here, it would probably be right at about three hours, so that’s good. The other thing is we’re just practicing one-a-day and as you guys have noticed and alluded to, we’re not doing walk through too often so they’re off their feet int he afternoon. I think it makes a lot of sense.”

Adam Gotsis on which young player has impresed him so far

“Both the young guys in our room, Dre’Mont [Jones] and ‘D’ (Deyon Sizer). They’re both awesome. They’re coming in, they’re rookies, they’re working hard and they’re doing everything they can. They’re ears are open to all of us help coach them up. As a rookie, you have to be a sponge and absorb anything that these vets can tell you. I think they’ve done an awesome job of that. Dalton’s doing awesome at left guard, doing really good. At the back end we’ve got a lot of young corners that are really stepping up as well. It’s going to be an exciting year, I think. We have so much talent out there and we’re really building that type culture on defense where it doesn’t matter who lines up in front of us, we’re going to go out there and do what we need to do to win the game.”

Kareem Jackson on cornerback Isaac Yiadom

“Isaac’s been making some huge strides. This is my first year being here with him, but from what I’ve seen he has some good zie and has great ability. We’ll definitely be counting on him to play huge role in this defense this year. For me, it’s all about being here and helping him progress each and every day. For us as a secondary, it’s all about being one, being a whole and being one. As he goes and the rest of us go, so it’s all about helping each other go.”
