Lao has big night for Raptors, home runs can’t save Quakes

A quiet night for the system’s biggest stars, but strong performances in the short season levels by several up-and-comers.

Player of the day

With few top prospects standing out, Sauryn Lao takes the mantle by going four for four with two doubles, two runs scored, and three runs driven in. Lao upped his season average to .296 with the big game, and he’s now slashing .296/.342/.451 on the year.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City was off on Wednesday for the Triple-A All Star Game. They resume play Thursday night in Memphis.

Double-A Tulsa

A late rally was not enough to overcome a large early deficit, as the Drillers fell to the Springfield Cardinals 8-4. Zach McKinstry led the charge by going three for three with a walk and a double. McKinstry also scored twice while driving in a pair. Cristian Santana went two for four with a run driven in.

J.D. Martin was hit hard, surrendering six runs on nine hits in five innings. Michael Boyle and Logan Salow each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, with Salow striking out two.

Class-A Rancho Cucamonga

The Quakes struck out 15 times in route to a 5-2 defeat by the San Jose Giants. Jeren Kendall and Niko Hulsizer each homered in the first two innings for the Quakes only runs. Miguel Vargas went zero for three but was the only Quakes’ starter not to strike out.

Austin Hamilton took the loss in allowing three runs in 4.2 innings, striking out four and walking two. Bryan Warzek (1.1 innings, two strikeouts) and Brett de Geus (1.2 innings, three strikeouts) each had scoreless outings in relief.

Class-A Great Lakes

The Loons took advantage of nearly every opportunity, scoring six runs on seven hits to defeat the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins) 6-2. Dillon Paulson drove in a pair of runs in the fourth inning on his 12th home run of the season. Chris Roller had a hit, walked twice, and stole his 15th base of the year.

Jose Martinez went seven strong innings, striking out six while allowing just two runs. Justin Hagenman pitched the final two innings to preserve the win, striking out two.

Short Season Ogden

The Raptors knocked around the Idaho Falls Chukars (Royals) for fourteen hits in a 9-3 win. Sauryn Lao led the charge in going four for four with two doubles, two runs scored, and three runs driven in. Brandon Lewis and Sam McWilliams each went two for four with a double.

Alfredo Tavarez struck out five over the first three innings, but allowed two runs. Yeison Cespedes took the win by striking out a pair over two innings, allowing just one unearned run. Reza Aleaziz and Hunter Speer each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Rookie Arizona League

The AZL Dodgers Lasorda blanked the AZL White Sox 4-0. Israiky Berroa earned the win with seven strikeouts in five innings. Edwin Mateo went one for three with two stolen bases and two runs scored.

The AZL Dodgers Mota were clobbered by the AZL Rangers 16-5. Jeisson Cabrera lasted just two outs into the first inning, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk. Ismael Alcantara led all hitters with two hits in four at bats.

Dominican Summer League

The DSL Dodgers Bautista fell to the DSL Royals1 8-4. Luis Yan led all hitters with a single and a double.

The DSL Dodgers Shoemaker defeated the DSL Indians 8-6. Eynar Machin drove in three runs on his first home run of the season.

Transactions

Triple-A: Los Angeles optioned 1B Matt Beaty to Oklahoma City after activating Corey Seager from the injured list. 2B Angelo Mora was also sent from Oklahoma City to Tulsa to make room for Beaty.

Double-A: The Drillers placed 1B Chris Parmelee on the injured list.

Rookie: RHP Cyrillo Wilson was assigned to the AZL Dodgers Mota.
