Report: Patriots file tampering charges against Texans over Nick Caserio

The Houston Texans’ quest to upgrade at general manager could land them in hot water with the NFL.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots filed tampering charges against the Texans on Wednesday for the “attempted general manager hire” of New England director of player personnel Nick Caserio.

Now, the NFL begins its investigation process against the Texans.

The Kansas City Chiefs were docked two draft picks in 2016 for tampering with receiver Jeremy Maclin prior to the 2015 free agency period. The team was fined $250,000, coach Andy Reid fined $75,000, and general manager John Dorsey fined $25,000.

Where the Patriots could have a case is the night before general manager Brian Gaine’s firing on June 7. New Texans executive vice president of team development Jack Easterby, who was the Patriots’ former character coach as of Super Bowl LIII, was at New England’s ring ceremony. He could have spoken with Caserio then, and that could be the impetus for the tampering charge.

There is no word yet on whether or not the Texans have interviewed Caserio, though they have reached out to the Patriots as early as June 7 to request permission to interview him.
