Deshaun Watson finds T.J. Yates to be a relatable Texans coach

If there is one coaching assistant quarterback Deshaun Watson is going to find commonality with on the Houston Texans, it’s T.J. Yates.

The Pro Bowl signal caller has worked with the man who owns the Texans’ first ever playoff win through nine weeks of the offseason.

“Me and T.J., it’s just like he was a player,” Watson told the media after the first day of minicamp. “I think he came in my rookie year when I was hurt so I was around him a little bit.”

Yates had three different stints with the Texans. Houston selected the North Carolina product in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL draft, and Yates remained with the club until 2013, posting a 2-3 record, all in his rookie season filling in for an injured Matt Schaub. Yates returned in 2015 and led Houston to a 2-0 mark during a season where the team virtual had no starting quarterback. Yates’ final tour of duty for the Texans was in 2017, Watson’s rookie year, when the club turned to him and Tom Savage after Watson was lost for the year with a torn ACL.

Another commonality Watson and Yates share is they both used the same trainer, Quincy Avery from that Atlanta, Ga., area.

Being an ex-quarterback in coach Bill O’Brien’s system along with training in Atlanta makes Yates an approachable assistant.

Said Watson: “He’s a guy that I can go up to and talk to and he can relate because he’s been in my position. He’s been coached by these same coaches that are coaching me and now he’s on the coaching side, so he can relate to both sides, a coach’s perspective and also a player’s perspective.”

When Watson and Yates are in meetings, the 2017 first-round pick makes sure that he is parked next to the former Houston field general.

“We sit close by in the meetings as we review practice and we communicate and talk, too,” Watson said.
