Texans QB Deshaun Watson says his decision-making has improved

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has been diligent in the offseason working on improving his game.

One area where the Pro Bowl signal caller believes he has seen improvement through nine weeks of the team’s offseason program is in his decision-making.

“I feel like I’m ahead of where I was, of course, last year,” Watson told reporters Tuesday on the first day of veteran minicamp. “Just decision making, operation of the offense, being able to do things that I couldn’t do a year before and definitely my rookie year.”

In Watson’s rookie year, he had a 19-8 touchdown to interception ratio through seven games. Extrapolated out for a 16-game season, because Watson tore his ACL on Nov. 2, the Thursday prior to their Nov. 5 encounter with the Indianapolis Colts, the former 2017 first-round pick would have produced 43 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

While Watson played a full 16 games in 2018, his touchdown total was a little over half of what it could have been in 2017 at 26. Part of that could be due to receiver Will Fuller tearing his ACL in Week 8 and slot receiver Keke Coutee, as dynamic as he was in limited action, appearing in just six games.

However, Watson’s decision-making considerably improved from his rookie year to his second year with just nine interceptions thrown, and that was a full 16-game season’s worth, not calculations of what could have been on scratch paper.

It isn’t just orchestrating the offense where Watson feels he has improved. The former Clemson Tiger also believes he has grown as a leader overall.

Said Watson: “Being able to take control and take leadership of this offense and be able to get the young guys lined up, make sure the protection is right, make sure the ball is getting placed in the right direction or where the ball needs to be versus this coverage.”

The Texans continue minicamp Wednesday, and Watson seeks to keep up the positive momentum the team has developed throughout the spring.

“It’s been a great camp and we’re just trying to continue to improve and make this offense go,” Watson said.
