Firing general manager Brian Gaine may affect the Texans’ 2020 draft

The Houston Texans fired general manager Brian Gaine on June 7, but the timing could still have consequences on the club’s 2020 NFL draft plans.

At the NFL combine on Feb. 28 and during the club’s pre-draft presser on April 18, Gaine mentioned that the Texans’ draft plans start in June.

“What I learned is a lot about the process,” Gaine said in his April 18 presser at NRG Stadium. “Just having a full calendar season to start this process. What I mean by that is really going back to last June when you get your draft list. You start basically in June. You build out your process of how you’re going to calendar out in terms of how we’re going to do all of these school visits, where the prospects are. You’re doing it all through the summer months.”

With Gaine out of the way, senior vice president of football administration Chris Olsen is the interim general manager. While the Texans are working furiously to ink Gaine’s full-time replacement, the fact is the Texans have their top capologist, who could be working on an extension with Jadeveon Clowney, instead building out their calendar in terms of school visits and where the prospects are. It may be all on the shoulders of director of college scouting Jay Lipfert to build out this calendar.

“Then our scouts all depart in the month of August hitting the two-a-day practices, putting the plan together through the fall about where we’re going – the A-schools, the B-schools, the C-schools, the A-, B-, C-prospects — going through the season,” said Gaine.

It’s possible that whatever plan Olsen and Lipfert come up with may be thrown out the window by the new general manager, which means the Texans could be behind the chains throughout their entire scouting of the 2020 draft class.

Even as true to their reputation it was for the New York Jets to fire Mike Maccagnan in May, it gave the organization time to find a general manager to put in place and have direction for the draft, a plan that won’t be thrown out the window because more than likely new GM Joe Douglas is helping put it in place.

Houston may recover nicely and not have it affect their 2020 NFL draft preparation. However, firing your GM in June does have unintended consequences.
