Bill O’Brien doesn’t think quick general manager turnover will hurt the Texans

The Houston Texans cut bait with general manager Brian Gaine just a year and a half into his five-year contract, but coach Bill O’Brien doesn’t think that quick turnover will affect the team.

O’Brien met with reporters at NRG Stadium on Tuesday, the first day of mandatory veteran minicamp, and stated his belief that a strong organization that has everybody doing their jobs can sustain such sudden changes.

“I think you have a very strong organization,” O’Brien said. “I think you have an organization that works very well together. I think you have some really bright people in this organization that really understand what their jobs are and all of the different jobs that they have in this organization, including the players.”

Players such as quarterback Deshaun Watson, defensive end J.J. Watt, and receiver DeAndre Hopkins have expressed that giving any consideration to the general manager situation is beyond their pay grade. Instead, their job is to execute the plays that are called.

As a strong organization, the Texans recognize whose roles are what and that the club has to move forward.

“I think you have a group of people that reflect a very strong organization and everybody is doing their job,” O’Brien said. “Everybody is moving forward and everybody is able to adapt and adjust and understand what we all have to do to get better.”

While O’Brien’s primary objective is to evaluate the team throughout minicamp and get them ready for the 2019 season, he is also a part of the team’s interview process with general manager candidates, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

O’Brien may have his job, but he is also moonlighting as part of a five-person committee in the general manager search. It could be incumbent on other members of his staff, such as defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, offensive line coach Mike Devlin, and offensive coordinator Tim Kelly, to help ease his coaching role.
