‘I heard people say we were crying about spygate’: Derby players celebrate with ‘binoculars’ gesture as Frank Lampard admits play-off win at Leeds extra special after spy scandal

  • Derby beat Leeds to make it to the Championship play-off final on Wednesday
  • They trailed the tie 1-0 after the first leg at Pride Park but came back to win 4-3
  • Leeds fans chanted about Spygate during the first leg at the weekend
  • And Frank Lampard said reaching Wembley was extra special for beating Leeds

Frank Lampard was honest when he was asked whether it was extra sweet that it was Leeds who Derby had beat to reach the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

‘I’m not gonna lie because it is,’ Lampard said. ‘I heard a lot of people saying that we were crying about Spygate.

‘I haven’t thought about Spygate for a long time and we played them and we prepared for it, we prepared and we got a result.’

Leeds supporters spent much of the second half at Pride Park in the first leg singing a new chant to Oasis track Stop Crying Your Heart Out, which included the lines, ‘All of our spies are hidden away… Stop crying Frank Lampard’.

But on Wednesday night at Elland Road, Lampard was left smiling having watched his side overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit to win the tie 4-3 on aggregate.
