Former Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak was announced as the Ravens’ new offensive coordinator.  The Ravens announced the hiring on Monday.  The Ravens met with Kubiak on Sunday as well as former Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison.  The 52-year-old Kubiak replaces Jim Caldwell, who left to become coach of the Detroit Lions.

The team is plotting a strategy to bolster the NFL’s 29th-ranked offense. It’s a big move for the Ravens, who have also considered receivers coach Jim Hostler for the job. Former Washington Redskins and Texans offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, another finalist for the offensive coordinator job, is also under consideration for a position on the coaching staff. He could be the quarterbacks coach.

Kubiak was fired during a disappointing 2013 season, which the Texans finished 2-14. Kubiak suffered a mini-stroke during the first half of a November game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Kubiak is a former Broncos offensive coordinator and a former backup quarterback to Hall of Famer John Elway.

Kubiak, 52, has spent parts of the past eight seasons as the Houston Texans’ head coach. However, he was fired in early December with the Texans sitting with a 2-11 record. He interviewed for the head coaching job of the Detroit Lions but was beaten out by former Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell. There were also reports that he turned down interest in the Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator vacancy.

Kubiak has offensive coordinator experience, serving in that role with the Denver Broncos (2003-05). He was the Broncos’ quarterback coach from 1995 to 2002 and also spent one seasons as the San Francisco 49ers quarterback coach (1994).

Kubiak was hired as the Texans’ head coach in 2006 and he compiled a 61-64 career record and took Houston the playoffs twice before he was fired this season.

Overall, he has participated in six Super Bowls, three as a player and three as an assistant coach. He has been part of three Super Bowl-winning teams, one with the 49ers and two with the Broncos. He has highly thought of for his work with quarterbacks, having coached both Steve Young and Elway among others.
