Wennberg began development camp this week with a high level of confidence and has higher goals than he did during a previous development camp he participated in.
“It’s a different attitude this year,” he said. “I really want to be on the Blue Jackets. Last year I knew I was going back to Sweden. Of course you want to perform well, but this year I want to show I earned the jersey, so to be at the development camp is important but so is the one later.”
Wennberg was brought to to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in April. He was able to experience the atmosphere of playoff level hockey as well as get a chance to meet and bond with the players. He was then sent back to Sweden for his offseason conditioning. Now back in Columbus, he is more comfortable and ready to prove his skills on the ice. He wants to focus on showcasing his goal scoring ability and hopes that his hard work during the offseason will show management that he is ready to play in the NHL.
“I want to be a part of this team,” he said. “It’s a team on the way up and only going to get better, so of course I’m going to try and stick around.”
There’s no doubt he will skate well during development camp. The next step is to return in September for training camp where he will skate with a greater number of skilled players.
